A New Home From Scratch

There are many factors to consider when designing your new home, and it's important to avoid the mistake of putting time and money into a project that doesn't please you in the end.  By listening carefully to you and applying my 35+ years of experience in residential building, I can help put together all the pieces of your puzzle to give you a home that fits your specific lifestyle and provides years of enjoyment. An example is below:

KALAMAZOO, Michigan - Designed for a new development with deed restrictions on materials, size, and maintaining the natural woods, the owners simply asked for a single floor living space, acceptable for entertaining, with a lower level for grown children to come home to occasionally.  Lifestyle and tastes are fairly traditional, and they wanted their house to have a sort of tailored, timeless flavor, while maximizing views of the natural surroundings. It was designed specifically for this site, taking into account the best views, sun angles, the existing contour of the land and actual tree locations.  The result is a house that was literally slipped into the site with minimal disruption of its features.

Because one side of the home came so close to a nearby street, high transom window units were used, to allow  much desired daylight while maintaining privacy.  Transoms spread to other rooms in the house, as the overall design headed in the direction of an updated version of a Prairie Style home, so common to the midwest in the early 1900's.  Toward that end, wall-to-wall windows emerged on the private sides of the house, with horizontal bands of stone over brick, and stucco above.  The roof took on a simple, low slope appearance with wide overhangs, also a common trait of the Prairie Style, except that the sunroom was tipped upward to let in year round sunlight.
